Class Descriptions

Deb Dobbin - Dynamic Flow (Level 2-3)

Eddie Ellner - Yoga Soup A class offering nothing, if we’re lucky.

Candice Davantzis - Gentle / Restorative Yoga is a series of gentle held poses and body-awareness exercises that takes place on the floor using an abundance of props. This quiet practice is an excellent balance to more active forms of yoga, as it is both meditative and rejuvenating. Perfect for everybody from marathon runners and power yogis, to those who are recovering from an injury or who are connecting body, mind and heart for the first time. All can benefit from this deliciously relaxing practice which balances the entire nervous system. A bedtime treat for your whole being.

Joyful Movement Yoga is a slow-flowing, breath-centered asana (yoga pose) practice for all levels. We will build heat, strengthen and detoxify the body, and develop greater range of motion, all while drawing ourselves more fully into the joy of the present moment. Fun music keeps you moving in new and interesting ways, followed by a deep silent relaxation. Suitable for those who have never practiced yoga, those who have practiced too much yoga, and everybody in between. Dare I say, better than a cup of coffee to get you going?

Justine Hosseini Kula - Yoga Flow (level 2) From the sanskrit root kul- "grouping together," this class allows us to come together, focusing on principles of alignment, strength in foundation, increased range of motion, ease of mind, and divine creative energy. Every class will vary, just as the students in it, but prepare to be pleasantly challenged and deeply rewarded.

Megan DeAinza - Open Yoga is an integration of Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini and Therapeutic Yoga. Open Yoga weaves in a way that is based on the embodiment of the Self. This intuitive and holistic class is suitable for all levels, giving you tools to enhance and transform your current practice, as well as a welcoming and nurturing environment in which to share your Yoga with friends.

Sifu (teacher) Chris Wiedmann - Tai Chi Ch'uan (Grand Ultimate Fist) In this introduction to Tai Chi, we will explore the basic beginning movements, stances. foot work, and positions.
We will warm up with related Chi Gong (energy work), exercises, some Yoga, and stretches. This will allow us to develop a strong energetic foundation for more advanced progression into our Tai Chi form. Tai Chi is a moving meditation; it is an excellent compliment to seated meditation and Yoga. Tai Chi is the soft end of the spectrum of Kung Fu (hard work) training. It's focus is on internal strength or Chi (life force) cultivation. Tai Chi is also considered a martial art, as the movements all relate to self defense techniques.
Tai Chi is practiced for its's health benefits including balance, sensitivity, relaxation, circulation, calming stress reduction effects, mindfulness, propreoception, and graceful flowing harmonious movement with nature.
When I ask students over the years why they practice Tai Chi they always say the same thing; "because it feels good!"

Kelly Heath – Ananda Power Flow 2/3 DA deep, scrumptious heart opening vinyasa flow practice, fused with sweat, devotion and community. Includes more advanced athletic asana designed for the more practiced student.

Cybil Gilbertson - Modern Dance In this modern dance class we will use rhythm, musicality and various dance techniques to warm up, move through space and develop movement phrases. Though experience will be helpful, it is not necessary; individuals will be able to take class at their own pace.

Cybil Gilbertson - Yogalates When our deeper connections and musculature take on the role of being strong, our more superficial muscles can relax and do not have to fulfill that role. When we are strong at the core and pliable, flexible and supple on the surface; we enhance our natural and inherent ability to flow and move with ease and grace. The blend of Yoga mindfulness and flow, combined with Pilates focus and precision can be a dynamic duo to cultivate this balance.

Cybil Gilbertson, BA Dance, has been dancing professionally since 1997. She has danced with Santa Barbara Dance Theatre, Robin Bisio, Monterey Dance Collective, for SBMA NIGHTS and more. She is also the founder and director of NECTAR, at home at Yoga Soup. In addition, Cybil is a Certified, Licensed Massage Therapist, Pilates and Yoga Instructor. www.cybilgilbertson.com

Paul Ehrlich - Lunch Flow Yoga A multi-level flow class that is designed to give an overall body workout, align the spine, open the tight spots for increased flexibility and get you back in your body and soul. All levels are welcome.

Siddhi Ellinghoven - Kundalini-Naam Kundalini Yoga is the science of awareness. It is known as the mother of all yogas and the yoga of royalty. Naam, the word, rebuilds both body and mind making them purer and lighter. In Kundalini--Naam Yoga we learn the practical application of universal prayer, the science of sound and light-- mantra, mudra, asana, pranayama and bhandas.
-The Healing Flow of Naam Chanting the Naam, the word, to open the heart and to displace the chaos that exist in the mind.
I have been meditating for over 25 years and in my experience vibrating the Naam is the fastest way to release unwanted emotions, thoughts and habits and to create radiance and happiness.
When you chanting to the heavens the heavens will answer, that is truly a statement I can confirm. Chanting changed the way I think, feel and act.
"Meditation is like washing your hands, mantra is the soap". Yogi Bhajan
The chants we will be using are for protection, compassion, guidance and surrender.
All chants will be in compliance with specific mudras to enhance the benefits of the mantra.
-Kundalini Yoga & Meditation The Yoga of Awareness
Kundalini is considered the most comprehensive of yogas, combining meditation, prayer, physical practices and breathing exercises. “Kundalini” literally means “the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved.” This poetic metaphor alludes to the flow of energy and consciousness that exists within each of us, and enables us to merge with – or “yoke” – the universal Self. Fusing individual and universal consciousness creates a divine union, called “yoga.” The Upanishads, Hindu’s sacred scriptures that date back to the fifth century B.C., describe Kundalini, although the oral tradition reaches back even further into history. For thousands of years, this sacred science and technology was veiled in secrecy, passed along verbally from master to chosen disciple
Every class has a different theme, that's why I call it the Yoga of surprise...you never know for which theme you are showing up and it is always the right one!

Here is the grandaddy of modern Yoga, Krishnamacharya. After extensive study in Indian thought, the equivalent of multiple PhD's, he settled in Mysore, South India in the 1920's and synthesized the Ashtanga system. That synthesis can accurately be said to be the root form behind most of the yoga practiced in most of the yoga studios throughout most of the world today. One of his more dedicated students was Pattabhi Jois, who remained in Mysore and taught the system for seventy years.

Integrating Pilates is a class based on the fundamentals inherent of the work of Joseph H. Pilates, Ron Fletcher and Nia. Whole body health, whole body commitment and Breath develop balance in standing and centering; body and mind are integrated into isolated, controlled and expressive movement through awareness and mindfulness. "Integrating Pilates" activates the shoulder and pelvic girdles with spine movement incorporating standing and floor work (during part of the class a looped strap is held to establish traction and stabilization). Yin Yoga & Meditation Yoga is a quiet, gentle practice, suitable for all levels of practitioner. The postures are all practiced on the floor, staying in each from 3 to 5 minutes while relaxing the muscles. Book Club slated to begin officially with The Untethered Soul. Pull out your dog-eared, highlighted copy or pick one up at the Soup if you’re a newbie to Michael Singer’s work. It’s dense and intense and ripe for lively discussion. Eddie picked The Untethered Soul as his choice for 2011 book of the year, and traveled personally to meet the author. If Eddie’s in town he may stop by on the 9th and share his experience.

The Yoga Soup Book Club will meet the 2nd Monday of every month from 7-9:30pm. It will include Yin & Restorative Yoga poses that are both introspective and heart-opening. The deceptively simple looking Yin & Restorative poses have a profound effect on the Central Nervous System as well as what is becoming increasingly recognized as the Heart’s nervous system. Through these poses we access a deep sense of well-being and presence, remembering and experiencing our innate divinity and wholeness just as we are in the present moment. The book chosen for each month will be provocative and apropos to enlivening this process.

An offshoot of the book club will be a Women’s Yoga/ Writing/Reading Group to be held 7-9:30pm on the 4th Monday of each month beginning February 27th. The book for February will be The Unknown She, by Hilary Hart.

It is a dynamic, powerful tool for expanding awareness. Kundalini Yoga  is designed to give you “hands on” experience of your highest consciousness. It teaches a method by which you can achieve the sacred purpose of your life. It is universal and nondenominational.  In each Kundalini yoga class we will use a powerful combination of asanas (postures), pranayam (breath), mantras (sound), mudras (position of the hands) and meditation to establish an aligned relationship between the mind, body and spirit.

No prior yoga experience is necessary and it is suitable for all ages and levels.   Kundalini Yoga is a yoga for householders, for people who have to cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing businesses. Kundalini Yoga is for everyone who wants the skills to cope successfully with the challenges of living in this day and age.

The practice of Kundalini Yoga balances the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system, balances the chakras, quiets the mind, increases  energy, elevates consciousness and enables us to harness the energy of the mind and the emotions, so we can be in control of ourselves, rather than being controlled by our thoughts and feelings.  It creates a sense of peace, connection and well being from the inside out. "The Power of Kundalini Yoga lies in the actual experience. It goes right into your heart and extends your consciousness so you may have a wider horizon of grace and knowing the truth." ~ Yogi Bhajan
